Be unique, creative, and someone who admissions feels willOct 28 2004Political Science
Be unique, creative, and someone who admissions feels will make the best use of the university's tremendous resources. Impressive grades and scores while not a guarantee are almost like a requirment, since yes, its also a numbers game--CAS & Stern are harder to get into than other NYU schools, while School of Ed. & Gallatin are easier, though even Gallatin has been getting competitive as of late.
SAT: 1510 Male
I've encountered different thoughts about NYU from different peopleOct 15 2004Undecided
I've encountered different thoughts about NYU from different people. Some think it is a low-level public school (the people who don't have a clue) and many think that it is a top-tier school (those who are familiar with NYU) Anyway, i haven't met anyone in the university (except GSP) who scored below 1300 on their SATs. The truth is that NYU now is a very difficult school to get into, much more so than in the past. They only accept as lightly higher percentage of their applicants than our neighbor to the north, Columbia. (FYI, more people apply to NYU yearly than to Columbia) In truth, you have to have a strong high school transcript (GPA somewhere in the high 3's) and over 1300 on the SAT. These numbers are for programs such as CAS and Stern School of Business. (Tisch, Steinhardt, Gallatin will take lower numbers, but they are insanely competitive on the non-academic level) If you really like NYU, you should really apply early decision, as you'll have a much better shot at getting in. Good luck!
SAT: 1380 Male
I would say being from an underrepresented group orSep 23 2004Economics
I would say being from an underrepresented group or geographic area certainly helps as a good portion of NYU seems rich, white, prep. school and Northeastern. Other than that, grades, SAT scores, and activities are important just like at any other college, but in my experience it seems like the SAT score helped the most. The SAT basically got me in; I played 3 varsity sports, but I wasn't a recruit and my grades were good but unspectacular, must have been those SATs and SAT II's.
TestJul 13 2004Biology
Test scores seem to matter more than grades do. I had high very SAT's, but my academic record while good, was not exceptional. The quality of one's academic will also be considered (I went to a top ranked boarding school). Good essays and teacher recs can go a long way as well.
ACT: 34 SAT: 1510 Female
I know several students (the class valedictorian for example)Jun 30 2004English
I know several students (the class valedictorian for example) from my hometown who applied to NYU and weren't accepted. Why? Although high school GPA is quite important, test scores have a very large influence on your admittance chances. In such a large school, with so many applicants, numbers count especially in standardized areas. Legacies are highly favored as well. Extracurriculars? honestly, unless you were playing the viola with the Philharmonic at age 5 they're basically ignored.
SAT: 1400 Female
